Creating a Literate Nation by Leveraging the Power of the Family

Real heroes of "The Blind Side" movie to speak at 2010 conference

The real life heroes from the #1 motivational story in America will speak at NCFL’s 2010 Conference. Even better, the first 50 conference registrations will win the opportunity to meet them in person and will receive a complimentary copy of The Blind Side.*

In the last several weeks, audiences have swarmed to The Blind Side movie, which tells the inspirational story of Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. Oher and his adoptive father, Sean Tuohy, will be keynote speakers at NCFL’s Annual Conference.

As part of the audience, you will hear the behind-the-scenes story of the Tuohy household. Michael’s distinguished college career at the University of Mississippi included first team All-America, first team SEC and being a finalist for several national awards. He was drafted by the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens in the first round. Sean, a former NBA draft pick and current broadcaster for the Memphis Grizzlies, shares his personal anecdotes with Southern charm and relays the heartwarming message: “In our house, we believe in miracles.”

Michael Oher spent most of his childhood in various foster homes and moved in with the Tuohys when he was 16. “Who knows where I’d be,” says Oher, who with the love and support of the Tuohys improved as a student and became the most sought after player in college and professional football.

Michael and Sean will speak about defining family, the power of faith in each other and how we can make a difference to those who need us most.

His early life was fraught with danger and upheaval, but he doesn’t dwell on it. A USA Today reporter observed: “Like so many perilous encounters from his life, it rolls more than it lingers.”

Instead, he is determined to succeed – as a player and as a family member. “It’s been a long, tough road,” says Michael Oher. “A lot of work and dedication. I set my goals extremely high and I made it.”

“When he has kids, Oher says, they will hear it early and often,” according to a USA Today profile. “This sentimental side he wears like body armor. As much as he aspires to become an NFL star, Oher envisions himself as a family man and supportive dad.”

That’s the power of family.
